HP Unveils New Desktops Amidst PC Spinoff

Hewlett-Packard shocked the industry when they announced their plan to spin-off their PC business as PC sales continued on a downhill path, but when their HP TouchPad flew off the shelves due to their $99 sale, they decided to release another $99 batch and launched an all-in-one desktop. Sounds like an elaborate marketing strategy, eh?

It seemed as though HP appealed to the side of consumers to purchase things that will soon be unavailable.  People like keeping memorabilia, and when they learned that HP will stop producing the TouchPads, this triggered their instinct to preserve the “last” device.

And it seems like HP is not done milking consumers.  They keep insisting that they will spin-off their PC business but nothing has been said as how they plan to do so.  This makes people think that HP PCs may soon be phased out.  So, when HP releases a new desktop, it can be just another point of confusion for consumers.

And today HP unveiled seven new all-in-one desktops that will start rolling out on September 11.  The desktops are:

Omni

Omni 120 is a 20-inch all-in-one desktop that offers up to 750 GB of hard drive storage with your choice of an Intel or AMD processor, and will hit stores by September 21 at $400.  The Omni 220 is a 21.5-inch all-in-one desktop that features a cantilever (single arm) design, and will come loaded with Intel’s Sandy Bridge family of “Core i” processors and will hit stores by September 11 at $800.

TouchSmart

This line of all-in-one desktops comes with a touchscreen display and includes Beats Audio Technology.  The line includes the 20-inch TouchSmart 320, which wil go on sale by October 2 at $600, the 21.5-inch TouchSmart 420 available by September 11 at $700, and the 23-inch TouchSmart 520 also available by September 11 at $900.

Then there’s the TouchSmart Elite 7320 All-in-One Business PC that includes a 21.5-inch high-definition (no word on resolution) LED back-lit display, and your choice of Core i3, i5 and i7 processors. The Elite 7320 launches September 21, starting at $850.

Pro

The HP Pro 3420 features a 20-inch display, Core i3 processor, 8GB RAM and 2TB of hard drive storage.  The HP Pro 3420 will launch sometime in October at $600.

HP’s focus in all-in-one desktops roots from the consumers’ preference to space-saving desktops.

“When we entered the all-in-one business years ago, the focus was one-size-fits all,” said Randall Martin, chief design strategist at HP, in an interview. “Now it has expanded as we have seen an increase in the diversity of customers who are interested.”

HP is clearly sending mixed messages.  One day they’re selling, the next they’re launching new PCs.  But even as HP transitions away from hardware, its consumer sector doesn’t seem to be slowing down as quickly as expected.
