Todd Papaioannu of Battery Ventures Discusses Node.js Trends, Stealth Startup

Node.js is the big focus of this week’s NodeSummit, and executives and pundits from all over the industry are participating.  One of them is Todd Papaioannu, a former Yahoo big data executive, who’s gotten himself involved with the VC community, and now with Joyent’s open-source programming language. SiliconANGLE founder John Furrier interviewed him in theCube this week.

Papaioannu started by noting that the cloud and big data are the two megatrends of this decade, an argument not many industry insiders would disagree with.  According to him, Node.js has potential because it connects the dots between these two areas and one of the key drivers behind them, mobile, introducing even more advantages to both consumers and enterprise users.

From here on, the conversation drifted deeper into big data territory. Papaioannu commented on a statement by Hortonworks, saying that half of all the world’s data will be running on Hadoop within five years, pointing out that there’s a lot of innovation being done in this ecosystem right now.  This was the topic before the discussion shifted towards Papaioannu’s latest venture, a stealth startup named Continuity. He told SiliconANGLE exclusively that it will be announcing a funding round led by Battery later this week, and that – while the company is not ready to disclose any additional details for the time being – more will be unraveled at GigaOm upcoming Structure conference.

Throughout the rest of the podcast, Papaioannu continued to discuss the general direction big data is heading towards. He put an emphasis on how more and more industries are becoming data driven, such as social media. The tools in this market are today focused on delivering more targeted insight to users, while delivering it more directly to the decision makers.
