Earlier this week, data warehousing solution developer Teradata released ADW (Active Data Warehouses) Private Cloud, a solution designed to help customers take advantage of the efficiency and analytical benefits that consolidation can bring.
See, Teradata says, even those enterprises who’ve made the jump into virtualization are vastly underutilizing their computing resources, sometimes only consuming 25% of what they could or should. But a private cloud can bring that up to 60%. And Teradata says that its flagship ADW data warehouse product line has been giving customers 90-100% for years. And, as a cloud solution, ADW Private Cloud promises scalability and elasticity, matching server utilization to data mart demand.
“Chief Information Officers have more challenges and choices today than ever before. They face more data, more demands, more users – and they are accountable for the fullest possible resource utilization while managing costs, economics and capital expenditures. As a result, they need more flexibility to accommodate sudden demand swings – with a close eye on TCO as well as ROI,” Teradata Director of Product and Services Marketing Chris Twogood told me in an e-mail.
Beyond just the efficiency benefits, though, Teradata says that ADW Private Cloud can break down the walls between data marts and help customers gain valuable insight into their business. Put all your data in one place, Teradata says, and you have a bullseye where to apply analytics. In fact, Teradata recently announced a partnership with Hadoop-powered analytics provider Hortondata in a move to help customers leverage the potential of big data.
In short, Teradata aims to combine the benefits of virtualization with the benefits of data warehousing, even as data warehousing providers start to lean on their analytics friendliness to stay relevant. Just look at IBM, which positions its Netezza data warehouse appliance line as the analytics-friendly solution. And Dell partnered with Cloudera for Hadoop services on top of its new data warehousing products.
But according to Constellation Research principal analyst R “Ray” Wang, what sets Teradata apart is this relatively turnkey, private cloud solution for data consolidation – something no on else in the market is doing, he says.
