ClassedIn: The New Learning Social Network That’s Set To Take Education By Storm
Imagine this: Students, teachers, parents, all connected on a safe social networking platform, which allows document sharing for homework and assignments, provides online testing, a massive educational library, and real-time interactions – wouldn’t that be a great idea?
Well, it already is, and it’s about to take off in a big, big way any day soon, if a group of wealthy Russians have anything to say about it.
The popular Russian-language educational platform Dnevinik.ru has just received a healthy $5 million cash injection from the Runa Capital investment group, which is hoping to expand the software to the US, Europe and China.
Dnevnik.ru, which was launched in 2009, offers teachers, students and parents a unique platform for interacting with one another, and cataloging and distributing educational content. During the last three years, it’s quickly become the most popular educational platform in Russia and the Ukraine, with over four million users from 21,000 different schools in the country all signed up. Such has been its level of success, that Dnevnik is now eying up foreign markets, where it plans to brand itself under the more recognizable name of ClassedIn.
So why has Dnevnik been such a big hit in Russia? Quite simply because, there’s nothing else quite like it – a school document flow management platform, a learning management system, and a social network for parents, teachers and students to connect, all rolled into one. What’s more, Dnevnik is essentially free – all of its major functions are available for anyone to use. In addition, the website hosts an extensive library of educational literature, and offers online training programs for students that wish to prep themselves for their exams.
Now, with Runa Capital’s money, Dnevnik’s backers are hoping that “ClassedIn” will be able to take the rest of the world by storm in the same way that its Russian language cousin has done.
Sergei Beloussov, of Runa Capital, outlined his hopes in a short statement:
“Dnevnik.ru solves a significant problem – automation interaction between teachers, students and parents, and has potential to become the leading platform for the educational system of a new generation. We have invested in the company because we believe that Dnevnik.ru has created the world’s best educational solution and became the first in Russia to connect tens of thousands of schools and achieved millions of users in a short time.”
“Now we have a target as soon as possible to achieve 100 million users around the world, and we’re going to deploy all the resources of our fund’s ecosystem and our partners’ expertise to help Dnevnik.ru to reach that goal.”
There’s no question that it has the clout to do so. As well as Runa Capital’s money, the site previously attracted an additional $1.7 million capital from the Prostor Capital Fund, while it’s also signed a long-term contract with Russia’s Ministry of Education.
