It’s no secret that Google’s gotten pretty damn big in mobile. It’s Android platform has conquered the entire world, becoming the most widely used smartphone the planet has ever seen. Android is so big in fact, that there’s speculation China might even be planning to take action to prevent it from strengthening its grip on that country any further. That might seem pretty repressive, but when one considers the amount of money Google is making outta mobile these days, it’s also quite understandable.
Ah yes, the money. Google’s bleeding its mobile cash cow dry these days, no question about that. After all, if it wasn’t, we would have Larry Page making comments like this one:
“I expect mobile to revolutionize how people do marketing. So we’ll be able to make a lot more money than we do now.”
It’s clear Google is reaping a nice amount of revenue from its Android success, but what’s less clear is exactly how it goes about deriving those revenues. There’s a simple enough explanation for this mystery though – Google has done such a great job of monetizing its various mobile platforms that it enjoys multiple revenue streams, and with all the new products (like Google Glass) it keeps throwing out, it’s mobile money-making operations are only going to become more complex.
We’ve got the usual suspects of course – mobile ads platforms like AdWords and AdMob, together with Google Play have long been solid, reliable money spinners for Google and Android, but few people realize that even apps like Google Maps rake in a fair bit of cash. In the case of Google Maps, data obtained from this helps to improve Google’s local search experience, allowing it to deliver more geo-targeted ads that people are likely to click on. When one considers that almost 25% of searches are related to a location, its not difficult to see how powerful Google Maps can be.
Google’s mobile operations derive money in dozens of other ways too, and these are all laid bare in the following (extremely long!) infographic from WordStream, a US pay-per-click advertising firm. It’s come up with an extensive list of Google’s mobile products, detailing how each one helps to keep the cash pumping into its coffers.
According to CTO and founder Larry Kim, WordStream highlighted Google’s top twenty mobile products, grading them according to “quality, market adoption, value to users, value to marketers, originality, and various other factors.
