Tintri just launched the latest version of its flagship storage virtualization platform, Tintri OS 2.0. The solution features only one new addition, but it’s a major one: a set of VM- and vDisk-level replication capabilities branded as ReplicateVM.
The company says that its new software is an industry first, and boasts that per-VM replication eliminates the need for LUNs, volumes, tiers and other legacy storage constructs that burn system resources. This has a few advantages: developers can test and analyze data from a production database without reducing end-user productivity, and VMs can be brought up from any location as necessary. This latter option is immensely useful for data protection and disaster recovery in geo-dispersed cloud environments.
Yet another use case that can benefit from per-VM replication is VDI, since individual desktop images are usually created from just a few base images. There’s also the fact that more often than not, a sizable portion of replicated VMs have to be customized to accommodate different user requirements and protection policies.
“This release sets a new bar for VM-aware storage,” said Kieran Harty, Tintri CEO. “Today’s data center requires a far greater degree of agility when it comes to resource allocation, and we’re offering precisely that with this new release. This is a modern approach to modern problem, and one that’s tailored to meet the complex demands of the software-defined data center and take the pain out of the data management process for virtualized environments.”
Software-defined storage is a small but rapidly growing segment that is attracting all kinds of players, including none other than VMware: the virtualization behemoth acquired Virsto Software, a Tintri competitor, in mid-February. Contradicting VMware’s strategy is Microsoft, with a far less aggressive portfolio. Wikibon Chief Analyst and co-founder Dave Vellante details his best course of action for Microsoft in a report, read here. Tintri in turn is hoping to expand its presence with R&D investments and an expanding partner program, which will help Tintri position itself firmly in a disruptive and rapidly-changing industry, where even the big players face many challenges.
