Built-In Simplicity Brings App Creation to Broader User Set in the Enterprise | #servicenow

Matt Schwimmer, VP of Product Management, ServiceNow, accepted the invitation of theCube hosts Dave Vellante and Jeff Frick to talk in depth about his company’s latest product offering called the AppCreator.

Because Schwimmer kept stressing it was increasingly easier for customers to build unique applications with this new tool using the ServiceNow platform, Vellante wanted to know just how easy it would be for a moderate Excel user to build an app. Schwimmer joked that the only language one needed to speak in order to be successful was “Wallet”.

All joking aside, creating a list in Excel is basically creating a table. “And that’s just the depth of skills required to use the ServiceNow platform”, says Schwimmer. It is so easy, they fondly refer to it as point – click – publish.

The platform is easy to use, intuitive, auto-didactic and it does not require any developer skills. So, if you’re a rookie and you wonder what you could build in order to increase your productivity, Schwimmer swears that Incident Management is used by 90 percent of their customers. It can be used to write down and describe a problem to someone, so it can be a simple request form like opening a ticket with HR, or it can be slightly more advanced, according to the customers’ needs and level of expertise.

Simplicity for more end-users in the workplace

Be it a simple form, or a hotel reservation system, the bottom line is that the ServiceNow platform can deliver satisfaction to a broad spectrum of customers. To prove his point, Schwimmer relayed the inside story where, to show off and to prove the power of the AppCreator during the Annual Sales Training that was held in January, they gathered all the sales engineers and gave them 10 minutes to come up with a front-desk application. The process has been video documented and since then posted on YouTube (though we’ve been unable to locate the clip at the time of writing this article). The front desk applications are being rolled out at all the ServiceNow locations.

What AppCreator is changing in terms of simplicity is giving access to all the resources in one place. You can still use JavaScript, but you don’t have to be a developer to use this tool. Before this platform, before this service, if anybody wished to create an app of any sort, they needed to be fairly skilled developers, as there were different tools to create different things. AppCreator brings everything together, empowering even the least experienced computer users.

The power of the platform and services is evident through the increasingly growing number of partners.

ServiceNow includes several standard applications, such as Incident and Problem, and users can develop custom applications to meet their business needs. AppCreator is now part of the platform and the subscription, and there are no additional charges for this new service.
