Continuuity Targets Developers with Real Time Batch Processing in Big Data Applications

Developers are always looking for Big Data tools to make it faster and easier to build applications, with Hadoop as a preferred solution for storing and processing the data. Given that Big Data is on the verge of widespread adoption, creating applications on top of Hadoop is a complex phenomenon.

For a developer to get from an idea to realization, she needs to spend months on educating herself on the complexities of MapReduce. Big Data PaaS provider Continuuity has predicted the need for simplifying the development of Big Data apps and launched multiple stellar products, the Continuuity Big Data AppFabricTM and Continuuity Reactor, which revolutionize the developer experience. Part of the Continuuity Developer Suite, these tools provide a development framework designed to make building big data applications on Hadoop easier for Java developers.

Now extending its reach, Continuuity has released version 1.7 of latest Developer Suite that will integrate MapReduce into the platform and allow developers to run real-time and batch workloads on a single cluster over shared datasets. The developer tools include a single-node version of the Continuuity AppFabric, a software development kit and tools such as an Eclipse plugin, testing frameworks, REST APIs, code libraries and samples.

“Providing Java developers with the ability to easily build and run batch and real-time workloads on a single Hadoop cluster with a unified API opens up possibilities for building a new class of applications.  Instead of being limited to traditional batch workloads, developers can add real-time streaming capabilities to have the most current data reflected in their apps,” said Jonathan Gray, CEO and co-founder of Continuuity. “Additionally, with the availability of new application templates, developers will be able to quickly grasp the concepts of application development.”

With the latest version of the Continuuity Developer Suite, Java development teams have access to a self-serve platform with DevOps tools to easily create apps with real time batch processing to allow managing and scaling of applications on a single dataset. They can use the new templates to accelerate application development.

While platforms such as Hadoop are attractive because it provides an inexpensive place to store all big data information, the latest Continuuity Developer Suite will serve as an interface to extract user profiles from web logs, providing dynamic dashboards, enhanced metrics and logging for application diagnosis and debugging and analytics over batch processing.

It also provides tools and building blocks to create end-to-end implementations of common Big Data applications including streaming real-time analytics (OLAP), targeting and personalization, and anomaly detection. The developer suite is expected to be available for general release by July.
