Cerego uses data to help tomorrow’s health professionals study better

It’s been almost a year since Cerego exited stealth with an ambitious memory management tool that marries elements of psychology and applied learning with self-optimizing algorithms to bring education into the twenty-first century. The platform uses these algorithms to identify students’ strengths and weakness and generate appropriate personalized study plans that accelerate the learning process while optimizing knowledge retention, according to the startup. With over 3.7 million study hours logged to date, Cerego has proven to be a hit among online learners – and a force to be reckoned with in the academia.

Elsevier, one of the world’s largest scientific publishing companies, recently teamed up with the firm to deliver a tailored study solution for future nurses and doctors. Dubbed Elsevier Adaptive Learning, the software uses something called the Cerego Method to teach applicable knowledge that will “prepare students for real world performance.”

Besides optimizing content, Adaptive Learning also tailors a learning schedule for each student to ensure readiness for exams and encourage independent thinking and time management. To let teachers check their students’ progress, the product comes with dashboards that display knowledge usage and retention at the course and item levels.

“Research into the workings of human memory is well understood but rarely makes its way into tools that students can actually use, and this is what we are committed to delivering,” said Andrew Smith Lewis, the founder and executive chairman of Cerego. “Elsevier Adaptive Learning, powered by Cerego, provides an easy, intuitive and engaging way for students to learn faster and remember information longer, utilizing content derived from Elsevier’s distinguished library of educational text.”

While Cerego is helping its users learn more intelligently, IBM is baking cognitive computing capabilities into its solutions to drive value for decision makers. The company’s newly announced SmartCloud Analytics Predictive Insights service harnesses the power of Watson to process large volumes of operational data in a hurry.
