Smart homes for fun : Singing lights + smarter plugs

This week’s SmartHome roundup features a lightbulb that streams your favorite tunes, a smart plug, and a smart home learning system.

AwoX StriimLight

If you’re looking to light up your home but also want to stream music in any room without the hassle of setting up new speakers, you might want to check out AwoX’s StriimLight.

This little device fits into any standard light socket or lamp in your home.  The beauty of this device is that, because it connects to your existing house socket or lamp, you don’t have to set up anything new.  Just screw it in and you’re good to go.  No need to change anything else in your home aside from your lightbulbs.

The light portion of StriimLight is controlled using an IR remote that comes with the device, while the streaming portion can be controlled by any Bluetooth enabled device such as your smartphone, tablet, or even laptop.

Zuli Smartplug

Automating your home can get complicated, especially with a growing number of solutions hitting the market.  A team of engineers promises a smart home solution, but without all the fuss.

The Zuli Smartplug is easy enough to use — just plug it in your electrical socket, plug in your lamp or other appliances, download the app, and start controlling them with your smartphone.  Dim lights, monitor electrical consumption, and schedule when appliances should turn on or off.

The Zuli smartplug is also intelligent, as it can detect when no one is inside a room and automatically turn off connected appliances to save energy.  And it can even be programmed perform certain actions as you approach it.  It is currently on Kickstarter with 5 more days to go.  It needs your help to reach its $150,000 goal to push this device to market.

Webee

Webee is another crowdfunding project that aims to make it easier for people to control their homes remotely.  All you need is the “Boss,” which is the Webee hub that connects to everything smart in your home, and the Webee smartphone app.

Just plug in the Boss, download the app and it will automatically find all the smart appliances in your home such as the Philips Hue, the Nest smart thermostat, Belkin WeMo smart solutions and a lot more.  It’s like an all in one hub for all your smart stuff. Plus, it also offer a smart plug so you can turn your non-smart appliances into smart ones.  You can help fund it on Indiegogo.
