Cisco launches Internet of Things security challenge

origin_7562831366We’re seeing all kinds of devices being connected to the Internet these days that help make our lives easier and more manageable – cars, fridges, video cameras, thermostats, toilets – you name it, it can probably get online. That’s all well and good, but the only problem with this is that just like our computers and our smartphones, connected devices are as vulnerable to hackers and malwares.

With smartphones, tablets, laptops and computers, to keep them secured, people install antivirus, anti-malware, or security firmware to keep attackers out and secure their personal data. But what about connected insulin pumps, heart monitors, home appliances, cars, and other devices that can now connect to the Internet? What’s protecting these things from getting hacked?

The rather depressing answer is nothing, and so to address this IoT security issue, Cisco has just launched its Internet of Things Security Grand Challenge, which offers offers visionaries, innovators, and implementers the opportunity to define a future of a secure IoT.

“With the IoT as a significant part of the larger Internet of Everything (IoE) market transition that brings together connected devices with people, processes, and data, it’s even more imperative that we ensure the things we connect are secure,” Cisco posted on its blog.

The Challenge offers up to $300,000 in prize money, with awards from $50,000 to $75,000 for up to six recipients. Winners will be announced and showcased in this year’s Internet of Things World Forum, this fall.

If you’re interested to join in the search for the best security app for the IoT, these are the criteria you have to meet in order for your app to be considered:

  • Feasibility, scalability, performance, and ease-of-use

  • Applicability to address multiple IoT verticals (manufacturing, mass transportation, healthcare, oil and gas, smart grid, etc.)

  • Technical maturity/viability of proposed approach

  • Proposers’ expertise and ability to feasibly create a successful outcome

Deadline of submission of entry is on June 17, 2014.  Find out more about the Cisco Security Grand Challenge here.
