Smartwatch wars heat up as Microsoft is set to beat Apple to market
Microsoft Corp. is set to launch their wearable smartwatch in the next few weeks according to Forbes. In an attempt to capture the holiday season, the device will hit stores soon after launch. If reports are to be believed, it will put Microsoft ahead of the game in releasing its smartwatch on the market before Apple Inc. The Apple Watch is only set to be released in early 2015.
The health-tracking smartwatch will work across Windows, Windows Phone, iOS and Android, which will ensure Microsoft is set apart from their rivals in the wearable market.
Microsoft could also have a leg up on competitors with a battery that will last more than two days of regular use. Since the launch of the Apple Watch at last month’s event, it has been revealed that the device will need to be charged every day, just like the Samsung Electronics Co’s Galaxy Gear and Motorola Inc’s Moto 360.
Despite offerings by most of the big names, the wearable tech market is still uncharted territory; however, it is a market that is set to be worth $7.1 billion by 2015. Microsoft has dipped into this market before with their Smart Personal Objects Technology (SPOT). However, after partnerships with big watch names like Fossil, Swatch, and Suunto, and the injection of a lot of money into the project, Microsoft pulled it in 2008.
Microsoft is yet to announce the name of the device and the retail cost.
