AWS bags ISO 9001 Certification to ease data concerns

AWS certificationOn the eve of AWS re:Invent 2014, Amazon Web Services Inc., has announced a new certification that means it can now pitch its services to data-sensitive industries like the life sciences and healthcare.

AWS evangelist Jeff Barr revealed the new ISO 9001 accreditation in a blog post, saying it would enable customers to run quality-controlled workloads in the AWS cloud.

A number of AWS’ regions are covered by the new certification, including US East (Northern Virginia), US West (Oregon), US West (Northern California), GovCloud (US), Europe (Ireland), South America (Brazil), Asia Pacific (Singapore), Asia Pacific (Sydney), and Asia Pacific (Tokyo). The certification covers several of AWS’ services, including EBS, EC2 and AWS CloudFormation.

“It signifies that AWS has undergone a systematic, independent examination of our quality system. This quality system was found to have been implemented effectively and has been awarded an ISO 9001 certification as a result,” wrote Barr.

The ISO 9001:2008 certification should be of particular interest to organizations in the healthcare and life science industries, as these are compelled to operate a quality management program by FDA mandate. The certification is globally recognized, comprising of eight principles defined by the ISO Technical Committee for quality management and quality assurance, including customer focus, leadership, involvement of people, and process approach, among others.

According to AWS, the certification allows its customers to “demonstrate to their customers and auditors that they are using a cloud service provider that has a robust, independently accredited quality management system,” added Barr.

The announcement comes on the eve of the AWS re:Invent 2014 conference, which kicks off today at The Venetian in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event comes at a time when AWS is facing intense competition from its rivals, and it’s expected to come up with some answers to Google Inc’s and Microsoft’s rapid build out of their own cloud platforms, aggressive pricing and scale. Just last week, Google announced massive 80 percent price cuts for some of its own services, and its likely AWS will respond with its own price cuts and a range of new products.
