VoiceItt hears the vote of confidence

According to the National Institute of Health, approximately 7.5 million people in the U.S. alone have trouble using their own voices. Some cases are due to speech disabilities caused by medical conditions such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy, Alzheimer’s diseases, and even Parkinson’s disease. Talkitt, voice recognition software developed by VoiceItt, empowers people with motor, speech or language disorders to more easily communicate.

Because of its huge potential in addressing medical conditions and disabilities, Voiceitt has been awarded as the grand prize winner of Philips North America’s second annual Philips Innovation Fellows competition. The contest is in partnership with crowd-funding site Indiegogo, Inc. and was formed to recognize the next meaningful and innovative company and technology in health and well-being.

VoiceItt will receive $60,000 in prize money in addition to the $25,235 it raised on Indiegogo during the crowdsourcing phase of the competition. Aside from the monetary prize, VoiceItt will receive mentoring from Philips executives and relevant business leaders.

Smart bike for health

Baidu, Inc. has unveiled DuBike, a smart bicycle that is packed with health, navigation and security features. The bike has sensors that analyze and measure health metrics and telemetry, as well as route guidance technology on the handlebars with laser indicators to let the rider know when and where to turn. DuBike doesn’t need to be plugged in for charging, as kinetic energy produced while riding it is converted into electricity needed by the electronic components, such as the LED headlight, brake lights and the navigation lights on the handlebars.

DuBike sports a unibody design for durability, and its futuristic aesthetic could make it a target for bike thieves. However, DuBike comes with tracking capabilities so you’ll know where to find a stolen bicycle.

Baidu is said to be launching the DuBike in China by the end of 2014, while the rest of the world will have to wait until 2015.

Measure your health behavior by wearing a shirt

Hexoskin is more than just a shirt that monitors your daily activities, as it also tracks your heart rate, heart rate variability (to estimate stress and fatigue), heart rate recovery, ECG, breathing rate and minute ventilation and sleep, to name just a few metrics.

The shirt itself is made up of machine washable, high-performance Italian fabric, which is quick to dry, breathable, lightweight, odor- and chlorine-resistant, and provides UV protection. The tracker component of the shirt has 14+ hours of battery life; 150+ hours of standalone recording; connects with iPhone, iPad and Android devices via Bluetooth; and is safe for any kind of activities.

The Hexoskin starter kit includes a shirt of choice, the tracker, the app and USB cable and costs $399. You can order more shirts for $169 apiece.
