In the week leading up to and including Christmas Day, Apple Inc. dominated the festive season. Apple devices and apps accounted for 51.3 percent of all device activations.
Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. lagged far behind in second place with a 17.7 percent of all device activations, which means that for every activated Samsung device, 2.9 Apple devices were activated. Microsoft Corporation (Nokia) took third spot with 5.3 percent, mostly due to Lumia devices. Sony Corporation and LG Corp. took just 1.6 percent and 1.4 percent of the activated devices respectively. Xiaomi, HTC and Huawei barely featured with less than one percent; however, this could be due to Christmas not being a big day in the Asian markets where these brands are most popular.
Between December 21 and December 25, Mobile analytics firm Flurry tracked which mobile operating system’s version of popular apps were downloaded, in order to determine the device activation numbers. Popular apps included Facebook and Instagram and, like in previous years, Flurry saw a spike of 150 percent in the week leading up to Christmas, with the largest number of downloads happening on Christmas day.
According to data released by Flurry, two-thirds of the device activations were for medium-sized smartphones. However, there has also been a spark in popularity for ‘phablets’, with an increase to 13%, from 4% in 2013, with the iPhone 6 Plus being number one.
If the Christmas success is anything to go on, then 2015 may be a huge success for Apple’s ‘phablet’.
