Continuing its campaign to become a major player in enterprise security, Cisco Systems Inc. has swooped up security consultancy Neohapsis Inc.
Security has emerged as a major focus point for the company over the past two years. Cisco jump-started its efforts in July of 2013 with the purchase of intrusion detection provider Sourcefire Inc. and picked up malware analysis powerhouse ThreatGrid Inc. a few months later. It most recently unveiled on an open-source framework for detecting malicious traffic that uses Apache Storm to sift through millions of packets every second.
The acquisition of Chicago-based Neohapsis will enable Cisco to move beyond supplying the building blocks to helping customers implement its solutions, closing the loop in the process of becoming a one-stop-shop proposition.
Neohapsis services cover a broad spectrum, including risk assessment, compliance management and cloud security, which holds special significance for Cisco given its ambitious plans in that area. The firm also has a large network protection operation. And with projects completed throughout some 26 countries in 2013, Neohapsis possesses the global presence needed to support its new parent company’s international customer base.
Neohapsis is set to become part of the security services business that Cisco launched shortly after it acquired Sourcefire under the leadership of Bryan Palma, a former Secret Service agent who previously headed Boeing Co.’s cyberdefense division. No financial terms were disclosed, but the fact that the security outfit raised $35 million in funding indicates that the transaction is probably valued at least in the high eight figures. It’s expected to close in the second quarter.
