At Electronic Arts Inc.’s Q3 earnings call, the company claimed that the November release of Dragon Age: Inquisition was the most successful game launch in Bioware’s history, topping other hit games by the developer such as Mass Effect, Knights of the Old Republic, and the original Dragon Age: Origins.
“Dragon Age: Inquisition captivated fans and critics worldwide as it launched in November, and it quickly became the most successful launch in BioWare history,” said EA CEO Andrew Wilson. “More than 113 million hours have already been spent exploring the depth and detail of the single-player experience in Dragon Age: Inquisition, and more players are joining each day.”
Dragon Age: Inquisition is the third game in the Dragon Age series, whose critically acclaimed first game was followed by what many considered to be a disappointing sequel. The newest game has been praised for its stunning graphics and immersive gameplay, and EA claims that it has been named “Game of the Year” by 32 different media outlets.
Wilson repeatedly praised the success of Dragon Age: Inquisition, calling it “a true masterpiece from the team at BioWare and a game that is sure to be played for a long time to come.” But actual sales figures for the game were conspicuously absent from the earnings call, leading some to speculate that the sales, while strong by Bioware’s standards, might be less impressive to EA’s shareholders in comparison to top-grossing titles like Battlefield 4 or Madden NFL.
Overall, EA says it generated over $1.43 billion in revenue during its third quarter, which – while stronger than expected – was down from last year’s figures of around $1.6 billion.
Some of the other highlights from EA’s earnings call included an impressive 160 million monthly average users of EA mobile games, which included a roughly 45 percent increase in users for mobile sports games Madden NFL Mobile and FIFA 15 Ultimate Team.
In its list of expenses, EA also briefly mentioned “a $48 million charge for expected litigation settlement and license expenses related to our college football business.” This is in reference to a court case involving EA’s unapproved use of players’ likenesses for a college football video game.
