Lego is set to take on Amiibo and Skylanders with Lego Dimensions

HighRes_LEGO_DimensionsThe Lego Group has teamed up with Warner Bros Interactive and TT Games to create Lego Dimensions, a line of game-toy hybrids in the same vein as Skylanders, Nintendo Amiibo, and Disney Infinity. The 83-year-old Danish company is no stranger to creating insanely collectible toys or popular video games, so the mashup seems to be an obvious choice.

Starting with Lego Star Wars: The Video Game in 2005, TT Games has released over two dozen Lego video games, many of which came from licensed franchises. While Lego is new to the game-toy genre, this library of popular games and toy series already gives the company a head start.

“When kids play with LEGO bricks, they build beyond the singular brands, intermixing all of their favorite characters and universes, and we have come up with a way for players to experience that in games,” TT Games Creative Director Jon Burton said in a statement. “Now for the first time in a videogame, LEGO fans can play in the virtual world and in the real world – combining everything without restrictions. Imagine putting LEGO Gollum from The Lord of the Rings behind the wheel of the LEGO Delorean in New Ninjago City – the creative play is endless.”

While TT Games made its name with Lego Star Wars, it seems unlikely that toys from that franchise will be included in the new line of Lego Dimensions figures, as Disney now owns the rights to the films and has its own collectible game-toy series with Disney Infinity.

But even without Star Wars, numerous other properties from the Lego pantheon appear to be fair game, and the toymaker has an almost endless supply of characters it can churn out over the next few years.

The first wave of Lego Dimensions toys will be released on September 27, 2015, and will include characters from several huge franchises, including DC Comics, The Lord of the Rings, The LEGO Movie, The Wizard of Oz, and Back to the Future.

The base games will come with three starter characters, and they will be available for Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4.
