How old do I look? Microsoft’s Big Data knows your age

Everyone wants to believe they look younger than they really are, and people hardly care to admit their true age. Well, if you want to guess how old a person is, Microsoft has come up with a nifty way to do just that with a new data-driven app called How Old Do I Look?

According to Microsoft, the magic behind How Old Do I Look? is a combination of Machine Learning APIs, real-time streaming analytics and real-time business intelligence. This allows them to extract the gender and age of the people in the photos, obtain real-time insights on data extracted and create real-time dashboards to view results.

How do you use the platform?

It’s pretty easy to use How Old Do I Look? You either upload a photo or search the web for photos of yourself or another person. The platform is not perfect, which you’ll find out as you keep using it. In fact, you’ll probably notice that different photos of you yield different results. Some photos cannot be analyzed at all, while other photos will determine you’re much older or younger than you really are.

I took the liberty of testing the platform using photos from SiliconANGLE’s Editorial Masthead, and the results were quite interesting.

As you can see, my age in the photo is stated as 24 years old. And while the program was able to correctly identify me as female, my real age is 32. As for my colleagues, if you want to know their real age, you might have to do a little digging for yourself, or find them on Twitter and strike up a conversation with them.

So what’s the point of How Old Do I Look? For Microsoft, the team behind it determined that more people are willing to upload their own photos rather than use what can be found on the web. For users, let’s just say it’s quite fun to see how old or young you are perceived based on your photos.
