Dating app provider Tinder, Inc. is joining the social media craze of “verified profiles,” so users will know that the celebrity they’re hooking up with is the real deal.
The company, a part of IAC/InterActiveCorp, Inc. announced the move in a post to their official blog, because apparently people were pretending to be celebrities, when they actually weren’t.
“Each day, 26 million matches are made on Tinder, and we do our best to keep those matches real — that’s why we’re rolling out Verified Profiles” the post reads, before adding “Starting today, you may see a verified symbol on some profiles.”
“Now when notable public figures, celebrities and athletes appear in your recommendations, you’ll know it’s for real.”
The move to introduce verified members on Tinder comes at a time the app is still struggling to monetize, despite its amazing user figures: the company claims it delivers a staggering 26 million hookups a day, a figure that can be appreciated by all, not just condom manufacturers alone.
As we reported back in February, Tinder has introduced a “Tinder Plus” service that charges users for extra features, but the company has been remarkably coy on just how many people have signed up for it, which while allowing for the fact that the extra features provided may be handy for some users, aren’t really required if you’re looking for someone to sleep with tonight.
How, or under which circumstances the verified feature will be implemented also were not disclosed; Twitter, who for all intents and purposes created the verification concept with apps, approaches people to verify them, and there’s no way for a “celebrity” or other person of note to approach the company to get verified, perhaps, in inverse, Tinder will allow celebrities to apply for verification?
But then again, can you really see celebrities and other people of note going out of the way to verify themselves on a dating app famed for one-night stands, and even, according to some reports, spreading venereal diseases?
The verified feature is available as of Tuesday on Tinder, and verified users will (like with Twitter) be noted by a tick in a blue circle-like shape.
