AWS a force, but not the only choice | #reinvent

So what do you do when you need to test an application on Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS) or Oracle? That’s a job for Apps Associates LLC, a business entity that specializes in Oracle and AWS implementations to the cloud. It is partners of both and uniquely able to shine light on an industry that’s beginning to narrow to a few.

Stu Miniman and Brian Gracely, cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, sat down with Bill Saltys, VP of U.S. operations and business development at Apps Associates, to see how it has been impacted by the past two days of AWS re:Invent 2015. They also talk to Saltys about implementing Oracle or AWS for Apps Associates’ clients.

Oracle or AWS?

The discussion began with Oracle residing at the heart of their company, and Oracle’s implementations required the Oracle cloud as a basis. However, not every customer desires Oracle or Oracle’s cloud.

An example was cited by Saltys, who mentioned that some businesses had some branches using an older version of Oracle and some using a newer version of Oracle. This is a tricky and complex case. In this instance, moving them from a fragmented iteration of Oracle to a one-solves-all solution like AWS was the most practical solution. Sure enough, that’s how it panned out for Apps Associates and its respective client. So perhaps there’s a place for both.

Oracle and AWS

Instead, Apps Associates isn’t putting all of its eggs in one basket. As such, it chooses to offer both Oracle and AWS implementations and have the ability to specialize in recommending which would be the most appropriate for each client, according to Saltys. This ability to provide more than one solution is key in a market that’s likely to remain fragmented in the long term. It adds a dynamic component where others didn’t see much dynamism.
