How EMC’s all-flash array demystifies storage for DBAs | #oow15

Database administrators (DBAs) are no longer flummoxed by how their storage systems work thanks to EMC’s XtremIO, a leading all-flash array. The impressive offering from the Massachusetts-based company features scale-out and inline all-the-time data services.

Jason Kotsaftis, senior director of database solutions at EMC, related his excitement at this breakthrough during an interview with Stu Miniman, cohost of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, during Oracle OpenWorld 2015. “That’s been a really good step for us to helping DBAs see storage as simple,” he said. “You know, it’s very complicated to them or abstract to a lot of the customers we talk to.”

Simplicity for user is endgame of EMC’s flash products

“At the end of the day, it’s all about the application that you’re trying to run. It’s all about the business value of that application,” Kotsaftis stated.

Kotsaftis believes that flash is the key to greater simplicity and fewer headaches for DBAs and developers. XtremIO comes ready to go with features customers used to have to buy a la carte, such as compression, in-memory snapshots and security, making the experience simpler and more streamlined. He also projected the cost of flash products dropping in the next 12 to 18 months.

“Total cost of ownership of flash is going to actually dip below the traditional economics of disc or other types of flash drives. And it’s not about performance and IOPS, although that’s important,” he said. “It’s about the simplicity of the end user, the DBAs, the developers, the fact that they can get information faster, all the copies they need when they need them.”
