5 alternatives to Periscope, in case it goes down again

Since being acquired by Twitter Inc., Periscope has been occasionally burdened with the downtime we’ve all grown accustomed to by its new parent company. So what’s your alternative for real-time content sharing?

Periscope, the livestreaming app, got its roots as a real-time resource for those seeking updates on protests and other socially impactful events around the world, something Kayvon Beykpour, the co-founder and CEO of Periscope, personally experienced.

Users of the app are able to let the rest of the world see what they are seeing and viewers can ask questions, send their hearts of approval, or even just comment on what they are seeing.

From a protest livestreaming app, Periscope has now evolved into a tool that allows everyone to share every aspect of their lives in real-time, even stupid ones such as drunk driving, or illegally livestreaming a much awaited fight.

Just a few months after being acquired by Twitter, Inc., Periscope finally released the Android version of the app and hit 10 million users. There’s no denying that Periscope is becoming quite popular.

If you’re a Periscope user, you may have noticed that the service has suffered a downtime recently, and if you’re one to go berserk when the ‘Internet is broken’ you might want to arm yourself with other livestreaming apps just in case Periscope goes down again.

Zapstream

Zapstream screenshotA new entrant in the livestreaming sector is Zapstream (Loop Communications). What makes it different from other livestreaming apps is that it allows users to add text, drawings, as well as visual and aural effects directly to their live video streams in real time.

Some of the things they can do while livestreaming include doodling while recording, change the pitch of their voice, add filters such as bulge, slim or cartoon, or even add color filters to the stream.

Creators and viewers of Zaps can also take snapshots of any stream and share them on Twitter or Facebook. Zaps can be made public or private, and viewers can set it so that they get notified when their friends start a Zap. For now, Zapstream is only available for iOS.

Hang w/

Hang w/ is a livestreaming app that can replace all your social media accounts so you’re always connected with your friends and followers. You can earn extra money by utilizing Digital Ticketing Platform, it’s pay-per-view feature, or by getting virtual coin tips from other broadcasters and viewers. Hang w/ is available for iOS and Android.

Meerkat

Streams are watched live and there are no reruns, but streams can also be saved to your Meerkat Library; viewers can re-stream any stream; and everyone can watch any stream on the web. Viewers will be able to interact and comment on livestream and can even take over your stream if they want to.

Meerkat is available for both iOS and Android.

Glide

Streams can be viewed live as they happen, or saved and sent at a later time. It utilizes the cloud to store all your created and received videos, which means they won’t compromise the local storage of your phone.

Glide also supports Apple Watch, which means you can watch videos on your wrist as well as get notified when one of your friends start streaming.

Glide is available for iOS and Android.

Teleparty

Teleparty screenshotThis is a livestreaming app that is also a good communications tool. Launching the app the same time as your friends automatically connects you with them, which means you can start interacting with them as you show them what you are up to and they can also show you what they are doing.

It’s like video chatting, but streams are made automatically when you launch the app.

Teleparty is available for iOS.
