How HPE plans to meet the dynamics of a new server market | #HPEDiscover
In the technology world, servers are the workhorses that do the heavy lifting of networked computing. As the digital revolution makes new demands of business infrastructure, so too must servers offer greater performance and power to compete. The world of servers is also changing, fragmenting as new technologies such as the Cloud and the Internet of Things call for specialized services.
To shed some light on these changes in the server world, John Furrier and Dave Vellante of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, talked with Alain Andreoli, SVP and GM for the Global Servers Business Unit at Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. (HPE), during the HPE Discover 2015 conference in London, England.
A changing server market
The talk started with a look at HPE’s own plan for dealing with the changing server market.
“We specialize,” Andreoli replied. He explained that once, everything was in the data center, with a few high-end, mission-critical servers, while every other server was a generic machine. Now, there is high-performance computing, convergence, the Cloud and the Internet of Things.
He said that HPE decided to specialize in products and services for each of these different markets, as they all have different dynamics. With this approach, he continued, the company is able to capture the needs of every customer.
Partners and horizons
While HPE is a strong company, even it can’t take on this market alone. Adreoli then spoke about the many thousands of partners HPE has joined together. “If it can be done with a partner,” he said, “we don’t have to do it alone.” Partners, in this plan, have two roles. One is fulfillment, offering customers flexibility that HPE itself can’t. Second, the partners also power demand generation, bringing the market to HPE.
Andreoli also mentioned what he termed “horizons,” different facets of the server market. There are three, he said, that of the data center, then the Cloud, and finally devices for the Internet of Things. In his view, computing must move with these horizons, out of the dungeon, to the Cloud, and then to everywhere. He explained that HPE is building and taking partners to chase these horizons.
