‘Far Cry: Primal’ dev explains why the game won’t include multiplayer

It is hard to deny that multiplayer is one of the biggest trends in modern gaming, and purely single player games seem to be less and less common, particularly from AAA studios. Unfortunately, multiplayer is sometimes a tacked-on, poorly implemented aspect of many games, which can take away from the overall game experience.

According to Jason Paradise, a developer at Ubisoft, that is exactly why the upcoming Far Cry: Primal will not include any form of multiplayer

“We are focusing entirely on creating the best possible Far Cry experience for our fans,” Paradise wrote in response to a fan question in a forum post on Steam (via VG247). “Bringing the Stone Age to life and providing players with a strong gameplay experience based off of the Far Cry legacy meant we had to reinvent our core gameplay loop.”

“This was definitely not a small undertaking. Our focus was on delivering this fantasy which required clear priorities for the team. Therefore, in the early stages of the project, we made the difficult choice of focusing our efforts on the single player experience.”

Mixed reaction from fans

While some plans have applauded Ubisoft for this decision, others have questioned why the studio will not be offering a multiplayer experience for Far Cry: Primal despite the fact that multiplayer had been available on both Far Cry 3 and Far Cry 4, neither of which, they argued, were negatively affected by having a multiplayer mode.

Some users responded to Paradise’s comment saying that the lack of a co-operative multiplayer mode made them less interested in the game.

“I love my single player games, but where I would have bought a game like this full price with a co-op mode, I’ll probably wait for a sale,” Steam user Fanible wrote in response to Paradise’s comment. “Co-op and multiplayer games you want to jump on top of being able to play with your mates that are also playing at that time.”

“Single player games can wait. They’re not going anywhere.”
