PlayStation VR may not be arriving until Fall according to GameStop’s CEO

Console fans who were feeling left out by all of the PC love from virtual reality devices like Oculus Rift and HTC Vive were excited when Sony Corp announced its own PlayStation VR, but it looks like they may still have a bit of a wait before getting to try out the new device.

According to a statement made by GameStop Corp CEO Paul Raines, PlayStation VR may not be arriving for some time.

“We will launch the Sony product (PlayStation VR) this fall,” Raines said in a recent interview with Fox Business (via Forbes).

Sony has yet to confirm Raines’ comment, but a representative for the company told VideoGamer “the launch date [for PlayStation VR] will be announced in due course. We have nothing more to comment on at this time.”

PlayStation VR: Not as cheap as Google Cardboard, not as powerful as Oculus Rift

Even when PlayStation VR does finally arrive, it is difficult to predict how it will be received by the average PlayStation owner.

While the specs on PlayStation VR are impressive, the PlayStation 4 itself is incapable of displaying the high resolutions and lightning quick frame rates of high-end gaming PCs, so the experience will not be on par with PC VR devices like Oculus Rift or HTC Vive.

Also, while there has been no confirmation from Sony on how much its VR system will cost, it is hard to imagine that it will actually be significantly cheaper than Oculus Rift, which is currently priced at $599.

Of course, there are a few potential advantages that PlayStation VR could gain over its PC counterparts. Most importantly, there will be no worry for PlayStation 4 owners that their device will not be able to handle VR.

The real deciding factor for many consumers will be the software available for each device, and PlayStation already has a head start, having announced earlier this year that it has over 100 VR titles currently in development.
