Fallout 4’s mod creation kit will finally arrive on PC in April, consoles to follow soon after

It may not be as early as most players were hoping, but it looks like the official mod creation kit for Fallout 4 will finally be arriving on PC in April.

Bethesda Game Studios head Todd Howard confirmed the vague timeline for the release in a recent interview with GameInformer.

“Our goal is between the first two DLCs,” Howard said. “It’ll go up at that time on PC. In April. All of that stuff will go up on PC. People are beta testing it.”

Unfortunately, console players will have to wait a bit longer for official mod support, but the good news is that it will actually be arriving at some point in the near future.

“There’ll be a lag on consoles,” Howard explained. “We want to get it up on PC and have it work. It’ll probably be a good month before it hits Xbox One, and another month for PlayStation 4.”

Wait, aren’t there already mods for Fallout 4?

Even without an official mod creation kit, Fallout 4 already has a dedicated modding community who have churned out hundreds of mods for the game.

Some of the most popular mods already made for the game include a revamped dialogue interface, an expansion to the game’s weapon and armor modification system, and (of course) several nudity mods.

But while a number of mods have already been created for Fallout 4, their scope is limited without access to the creation kit, which allows modders to more easily access and change game files.

Mods created using Skyrim’s creation kit, for example, included complicated programs that could add a search bar for inventory items or automatically sort items into categorized containers. Many also added entirely new characters, quest lines, locations, and more. In some cases, Skyrim mods were nearly the same size as some of the game’s official DLC.

The introduction of Fallout 4’s mod creation kit will dramatically expand what modders are capable of adding to the game, and will likely add enough content to make the wait for Fallout 5 at least a little more bearable.
