Cisco acquires Synata to boost Spark search capabilities

Cisco Systems Ltd. is looking to boost the search capabilities of its Spark collaboration application, having just acquired enterprise search technology maker Synata.

Synata offered technology that allowed enterprises to search their on-premises and cloud-based applications from a single venue. That service has now been shut down, but will be integrated into Cisco Spark, an application that runs on Cisco’s collaboration cloud. The acquisition is just the latest in a number of buys Cisco has made to bolster its collaboration unit, having recently snapped up companies like Collaborate.com, Assemblage, Acano Ltd. and Tropo LLC.

Cisco touts its Spark app as a way for enterprises to connect to their customers via multiple mediums, and Synata’s technology will be added to its search stack, said Rowan Trollope, general manager of Cisco’s collaboration and IoT units, in a blog post.

“While we have recently released secure search in Cisco Spark, we’ve always envisioned it being even better,” Trollope explained. “Advances in deep learning and artificial intelligence are making it possible for computers to predict what you want almost before you know it yourself. That’s what we want for Cisco Spark. We want it to be like that good friend who can finish your sentences. Super-fast. Almost uncannily accurate.”

Synata stopped development and shut down all of its services on March 6.

With the acquisition now complete, Synata says that all customer search indexes have been deleted securely, and apologizes for any inconvenience.
