Latest ‘Deus Ex: Mankind Divided’ trailer spells out exactly how the game will play

Eidos Montreal has released a lengthy new trailer for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, the highly anticipated upcoming sequel to its critically acclaimed Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

In contrast with most modern game trailers, whose flashy cinematics reveal nothing about how the game actually plays, Mankind Divided’s new trailer explicitly lays out what you can do in the game, and it looks like all of the Deus Ex staples we loved from the last game are returning, along with a few new additions.

Human Revolution star Adam Jensen returns in the trailer, which he narrates in his usual gravelly voice, catching players up on the events of previous game and how they have changed the world.

By the beginning of Mankind Divided, cybernetically augmented humans (aka augs) are facing prejudice and persecution from normal people, many of whom consider augmentations to be dangerous and unnatural. Considering the fact that an evil mastermind managed to send augs into a violent rage by tampering with their enhancements, resulting in the deaths of millions of people, they are not entirely wrong.

Thanks to his training and experimental military augmentations, Jensen has been recruited into a counter-terrorism task force that specializes in dealing with dangerous augs. Of course, there is more going on behind the scenes, and Jensen sense that “something big is brewing.”

Since both Human Revolution and Mankind Divided are set before the events of the original Deus Ex, chances are we might see the stage being set for JC Denton and his encounters with VersaLife and the Illuminati (no, really).

” … choice never comes without consequence”

Aside from setting up the story, the new trailer also focuses on the gameplay of Mankind Divided, with a particular emphasis on allowing the player to choose how they want to play the game.

This includes the choice between a “guns blazing” playthrough, where players mow down anyone who gets in their way, or a more stealthy, non-lethal playthrough, which is generally more difficult but also more rewarding.

As with previous Deus Ex games, Mankind Divided will also allow players to choose how they interact with other characters, and in the trailer, we can see the return of Jensen’s ability to monitor other people’s vitals as a way of detecting their stress levels and whether or not they might be lying.

Jensen himself notes the choices available in the game, saying, “Whether I’m working by the book or going rogue, choice never comes without consequence.”

Unless it gets delayed againDeus Ex: Mankind Divided is set to release on August 23 for Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
