Bethesda Game Studios has released an official trailer for the upcoming Fallout 4: Far Harbor DLC, which releases on May 19, and so far the new content seems to have some strong references to the works of horror writer H. P. Lovecraft, whose stories were often set in sleepy villages in the northeastern United States.
Here’s Bethesda’s brief description for the setting of Far Harbor:
“A new case from Valentine’s Detective Agency leads you on a search for a young woman and a secret colony of synths. Travel off the coast of Maine to the mysterious island of Far Harbor, where higher levels of radiation have created a more feral world. Will you work towards bringing peace to Far Harbor, and at what cost?”
The new trailer shows off a few creatures and locations that have some strong Lovecraftian flavor, including horrific fish monsters and a conspiratorial cult. The most likely candidate for the DLC’s inspiration, if it does indeed come from Lovecraft, would be the short story “The Shadow Over Innsmouth,” which takes place in a seaside village with a dark secret.
Bethesda is no stranger to making Lovecraft references in its games, and Fallout 4 even has a few of its own already. For example, the Dunwich Borers mine location is a play on Lovecraft’s “The Dunwich Horror,” complete with crazed cultists and eldritch abominations. Some of the studio’s other games also include both direct and indirect Lovecraft references, including the Skyrim: Dragonborn DLC, which was essentially one big, long Lovecraft homage.
