Multinational hardware and electronics corporation, Acer Service Corporation, has suffered a data breach that puts a good amount of customer information at risk. An intruder took advantage of a vulnerability in the third-party payment processing system, and may have accessed customer payment information as a result.
While Acer does not know how many customers may have been impacted by this hack, they are notifying all users who accessed its site between May 2015 and April 2016. Yahoo! Tech notes that the hacker may have gained access to data including names and addresses, payment card numbers, and important credit card information such as expiration dates and security codes.
However, Acer’s investigation has found no evidence that the attacker gained access to user login information, so there’s no dire need to start changing passwords. The company doesn’t collect Social Security numbers either, so while there may be a severe risk for credit card theft, identity theft is less likely.
Following the breach, Softpedia reports, Acer has notified the credit card payment processor and resolved the issue that led to the breach. It’s now informing all affected US customers, as US law requires, although customers in all countries who have shopped on its website should be wary. It is not offering any credit protection at this time, but has advised customers to review their account statements and be on the lookout for any signs of fraud.
