Red Hat’s monitoring service can now peer inside your containers

Containers are the main focus at Red Hat Inc.’s customer conference in San Francisco this week. The company kicked off the event yesterday by launching a tool for finding security issues in Docker instances, and is following up this morning with a new iteration of its IT monitoring service that can similarly identify maintenance issues.

Red Hat Insights promises to provide visibility into every major component of a container cluster, starting with the workloads running inside. The tool looks for application configuration problems that might slow response times, and analyzes how each service manages its data to find ways of improving storage efficiency. It’s then able to provide automated recommendations on how to make better use of capacity.  And for added measure, the underlying file system is checked as well to ensure that the deployment’s Docker images are all available for use.

Administrators can alternatively have Red Hat Insights check only specific parts of a container based on what its individual operational profile calls for. As an example, an instance group that has suffered slow data access in a recent period might only require using the service’s storage analysis feature. And large IT departments can streamline troubleshooting operations even further by using the new assignment manager that is rolling out in conjunction, which lets managers quickly relegate maintenance tasks to team members.

The feature is accessible not only in Docker clusters but also all the other types of environments that Red Hat Insights supports, including traditional virtualized infrastructure and OpenStack deployments. It’s available alongside optional integration with the vendor’s Satellite and CloudForms automation systems that makes it possible to remedy maintenance issues directly through the native monitoring dashboard. The company hopes that the functionality will set its offering apart from the dozens of other IT operations tracking products out there, many of which provide a similar level of support for containers. Some, like the recently-funded Sysdig Inc.’s namesake tool, in fact focus specifically on Docker.
