Mobile gaming is a big industry, which also makes it a big target. Combine that with the peculiar human tendency to ignore security patches, and you have the latest data breach, where the official forum for “Clash of Kings” was hacked and robbed of around 1.6 million accounts.
The stolen player database was recently posted on LeakedSource.com, a breach notification site. In it, ZDNet reports, one can find usernames, IP addresses, and information such as Facebook data for those signed in through their Facebook accounts. While there are passwords in the database, they’ve been hashed and salted for security and protection.
Following the breach, the forum has gone down for “maintenance,” presumably to fix the errors that allowed for this hack. The company did not focus on user security for the forum, and failed to keep the vBulletin patches up to date, in addition to neglecting even HTTPS website encryption. With that level of security, it’s more surprising that it took this long for the breach to happen.
Anyone with an account on the “Clash of Kings” forum should take precautions; even though the passwords are currently secure, changing them and any identical passwords would be a wise move. If you’re worried about your account’s safety, check haveibeenpwned, com to see if you’ve been caught in the breach.
There has not yet been any comment from the game’s developers.
