Will flash replace disk? Join the #AllFlash CrowdChat Aug. 25

In 2008, Wikibon’s David Floyer was the first analyst to publicly predict that high speed spinning disk would give way to flash devices. He was also one of the first to predict the rise of the all-flash data center.

But not everyone agrees. Some people believe that advances in disk densities will continue to outpace flash innovations, and that new techniques that leverage flash selectively, combined with advanced file systems and new algorithms, will extend the life of spinning disk and lead to dramatically lower costs relative to flash.

This Thursday, Aug. 25, join a panel of experts to discuss this topic in a CrowdChat and debate:

  • What do the trends in spinning disk volumes mean to the market?
  • Are flash costs declining faster than spinning disk, or is that a myth?
  • Does the flash industry have the fabrication capacity to replace spinning disk?
  • Is data reduction a lynch pin for all-flash or is it that benefit over-stated?
  • What does this all mean for how organizations create value with data?

About CrowdChat

CrowdChat is an engagement application that enables groups to organize conversations around a hashtag. The application works with multiple social networks and creates a more structured experience than a Twitter chat. CrowdChat has many useful features including threaded conversations, automatic insertion of hashtags, support for posts of more than 140 characters, user control over what to post to social networks, voting, deep linking from social network posts back to CrowdChat, automatic transcript creation, analytics and much more.

Tips for using CrowdChat

This CrowdChat will last one hour. At exactly 12 noon EDT, the screen will refresh and CrowdChat will go live with a chat window available. Wikibon Chief Analyst David Vellante will then kick off the chat with the first question. For the best experience:

  • Log into CrowdChat with Twitter, Linkedin or Facebook.
  • Reply to questions in the thread (hit reply to do so).
  • Feel free to post your own questions in a new thread.
  • You can insert graphics but only as the first post in a new thread.
  • Make sure to vote on posts.
  • Be respectful and have fun!
