Huawei acquires Israeli database security startup Hexatier for $42M

Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. has acquired Israeli database security and compliance solutions startup HexaTier Ltd. for a reported $42 million.

Founded in 2009 and previously known as GreenSQL, HexaTier offers database security and compliance through database reverse proxy technology to secure cloud-hosted databases and DBaaS platforms. HexaTier is installed as a front-end to a database and works as a reverse proxy. It hides and secures database content, with the software reviewing and inspecting both database queries and database responses allowing enterprise users to secure, accelerate, audit and mask sensitive information stored on their databases

News of acquisition talks was first reported Dec. 20 by Reuters, which claimed Huawei wanted to use HexaTier as a base to setup up a research and development center in Israel for databases in the cloud. Israeli news site Calcalist confirmed the deal had taken place Dec. 27.

Huawei’s acquisition of HexaTier follows its purchase in early December of another Israeli company, switch and router manufacturer Toga Networks Ltd. in a deal believed to be valued as high as $150 million. In addition to making switchers and routers, Toga also offers cloud storage systems and applications for data centers.

That deal was said to be part of Huawei’s push to expand its telecom equipment vendor business in a market where it is already the world’s largest supplier. But it’s not clear where HexaTier will fall into that strategy unless Huawei is now pushing into cloud services as well.

Coming into the acquisition, HexaTier had raised $14.4 million over three rounds from investors including Jerusalem Venture Partners, Texas Atlantic Capital, Magma Venture Partners and Rhodium. HexaTier employs 40 people that are split between offices in Tel Aviv, Boston and California.
