Skyport Systems moves to secure hybrid clouds at the network edge

Skyport Systems Inc. is adding secure cloud application policy management capabilities to its server infrastructure through a new Hybrid Cloud Edge offering.

Skyport Systems emerged from stealth back in May 2015 with an infrastructure platform that simultaneously runs and secures business critical applications. It’s a fully integrated hardware, software and service offering that’s designed to simplify the assembly, deployment and operational effort needed to manage secure servers.

The new Hybrid Cloud Edge feature was designed after Skyport saw how its customers were using its products in the real world, the company said. It noticed that one of the main challenges faced by customers was how to move to the cloud faster. Hybrid Cloud Edge tries to resolve this by making the network edge more agile so it can fit into modern DevOps workflows.

In traditional networks the firewall often acts as a choke point for traffic, which slows down migrations to the cloud. But Hybrid Cloud Edge allows Skyport to separate roles within the system. This enables users to run the system at the edge, with self-service application policies being delegated to the developers.

“This shared responsibility increases innovation and speed while improving accountability and visibility into the connection between existing data centers and the new cloud services,” Skyport said in a statement.

Skyport is pitching its solution is an alternative to Cloud Access Security Broker technologies, which secure gateways to enable safe and reliable access to the cloud. But while CASB can help to securely connect users to the cloud, it’s not ideal for more specific connections such as application-to-application interaction, Skyport said.

“Our customers are rapidly adopting cloud infrastructure, but are frustrated by the speed that is possible with their existing environment,” said Art Gilliland, chief executive officer of Skyport Systems. “Skyport’s Hybrid Cloud Edge Solution empowers the accelerated adoption of cloud services while significantly reducing risk by putting the responsibility for policy definition and enforcement in the right place. Our goal is to make application connections easy and secure from cloud-to-ground.”

Skyport will be hosting a live webinar on May 24 to demonstrate how its Hybrid Cloud Edge enables faster adoption of cloud services.
