SIOS iQ update enables predictive analytics in VMware environments

SIOS Technology Corp. is revamping its SIOS iQ analytics software for VMware Inc. environments in an update that delivers new data integration capabilities from sources such as Splunk Inc., Hadoop and Elasticsearch BV, plus the ability to identify and correct the root causes of application performance issues.

In an interview with SiliconANGLE, SIOS Chief Executive Officer Jerry Melnick explained that a majority of larger enterprises are already using data fabrics like Splunk and Elastic to build warehouses of real-time and historical operations data. He said organizations can tap that data to get answers to key questions about the health of their infrastructure, but doing so is incredibly difficult as they need to build out custom analytics using a variety of tools.

“Regardless of the tool, to build custom analytics you need a uniquely qualified staff with both an intimate understanding of the data and a sufficient data science sophistication to query the data in a way that considers the interrelationships between data,” Melnick said. “[But] even with the right staff, assembling the appropriate models and creating meaningful visualizations or reports that comprehensively answer key questions can take years to develop, validate and tune.”

With SIOS iQ, he said, that undertaking is no longer necessary. The updated platform incorporates a package of machine learning technologies that can be downloaded and installed in minutes, allowing organizations to tap into a variety of data sources and gain comprehensive insights into application performance issues.

The release also incorporates a new deep learning technique called Topological Behavior Analysis that delivers what the company claims is the industry’s “most accurate” root cause identification. Topological Behavior Analysis works by considering the topology of all related components, including virtual machines, network, storage and hosts, plus the patterns of behavior between them, Melnick said.

With this new technology, SIOS iQ can identify patterns of incidents that relate to application quality of service and reduce these to a small number of recurring infrastructure behaviors that underly each problem. This means organizations can quickly identify the root cause, while the platform also provides recommendations on how to fix them using graphical visualizations.

“SIOS iQ analyzes real-time machine data from raw data sources across the infrastructure silos to uncover these component relationships and behavioral interactions,” Melnick said. “Patterns of behaviors in the topology are learned over time by analyzing multiple metrics arising from related components. As a result, [the platform] precisely identifies the incidents associated with abnormal behavior at a specific time of day, week, month and year.”
