Watch live from Cloud Foundry Summit 2017

What is the state of Cloud Foundry in today’s increasingly competitive market for leveraging open-source technology? Is it losing development support from big players like Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. and IBM Corp., and will alternative solutions from major contributors like Google Kubernetes displace Cloud Foundry’s efforts?

Looking to answer these question and others, SiliconANGLE is at Cloud Foundry Summit 2017, taking place in Silicon Valley, California, with exclusive commentary and interviews from our roving news desk, theCUBE. (* Disclosure below.)

Cloud Foundry Foundation, the open-source organization that heads up development of the open-source cloud platform Cloud Foundry, offers developers a choice of clouds, development frameworks and application services for building and running apps at scale on public and private clouds.

Google Inc. signed on as a gold member of the foundation in December, joining the likes of EMC Corp., IBM, Pivotal Software Inc., SAP SE and VMware Inc. The latest additions to the foundation include Orange SA and Minio Inc., the Amazon Web Services S3-compatible cloud storage server.

One of the founding members of the foundation, SAP announced last month the general availability of Cloud Foundry for its customers, following a year-long public beta.

On the other hand, HPE announced at the end of last year that it was selling the bulk of its Cloud Foundry assets to Linux provider SUSE, whose parent company Micro Focus International plc is acquiring HPE’s software business.

To kick off the start of the Cloud Foundry Summit on Tuesday, the Cloud Foundry Foundation announced it will help ease the management of Kubernetes with Kubo, an open-source project that originated with Pivotal and Google. Kubernetes is also an open-source software package, but tends to be difficult to manage. To ease the management, Kubo will apply BOSH technology that will make it easier for operations engineers to manage distributed systems.

Keynote speakers at Cloud Foundry Summit include Cloud Foundry Foundation executives Abby Kearns, executive director, and Chip Childers, chief technology officer.

Other keynote speakers include Opal Perry, divisional chief information officer claims, vice president technology and strategic ventures at Allstate Insurance Co.; Greg Otto, executive director of cloud services at Comcast Corp.; Jessica Criscione, director of technology at Ogilvy & Mather Inc.; Björn Goerke, chief technology officer and president of SAP cloud platform at SAP SE; Karen Holtzblatt, chief executive officer of InContext Enterprises Inc.; Mojgan Lefebvre, senior vice president and chief information officer of global specialty at Liberty Mutual Insurance Co.; Kyla McMullen, assistant professor at the University of Florida; and Stephen O’Grady, principal analyst and co-founder of RedMonk LLC.
