Ambitious cloud strategy to fuel Nutanix’s growth, says chief product officer

Nutanix Inc. made significant news at its .NEXT gathering last week with the announcement of a partnership with Google to help large enterprises migrate workloads to the cloud. However, as comments from the chief product officer at Nutanix indicate, cloud options are numerous and his company is planning to cover as many bases as possible.

“For Nutanix, the more someone tastes the wine of public cloud, the faster they will accelerate the transition of their private infrastructure to look like Amazon. We fundamentally think that cloud is not a zero sum game,” said Sunil Potti (pictured), chief product and development officer at Nutanix Inc.

Potti stopped by theCUBE, SiliconANGLE’s mobile livestreaming studio, and answered questions from hosts Dave Vellante (@dvellante) and Stu Miniman (@stu), during Nutanix.NEXT US 2017 in Washington, D.C. They discussed the strategy behind Nutanix’s recent product announcements and a couple of important developments that might have been overshadowed by news of the Google partnership. Google and Nutanix grow closer

Potti is enthusiastic about giving customers the ability to take Google Cloud’s Platform as a Service and fuse it with the Nutanix Enterprise Cloud. “Google and Nutanix have started getting really close from a technology integration and delivery perspective,” Potti said.

The private cloud remains an important cornerstone for the enterprise infrastructure, Potti added. “Before we build this hybrid cloud, whether with AWS or Google, you still have to build a proper private cloud,” he stated.

During the conference, a couple of other significant developments emerged that were overshadowed by the Google news. Potti cited Acropolis File Services, the company’s web-scale native file serving solution, as an example. “It’s one of our fastest-growing features in the last six to nine months,” he said.

Another key development Potti discussed included continued advances in machine learning propelling the technology into the mainstream. “It all comes down to manifesting itself as tangible things that the customer sees,” he said.

Potti was bullish about his company’s prospects for future growth. “Even if half the business goes to AWS and Google, we can still be a company larger than VMware,” he said. “We don’t have to be greedy about near-term; we can be long-term greedy.”
