The current state of women in tech explored at Grace Hopper 2017

What is the current state of women in technology, given the rising complaints of gender inequality and sexual harassment in tech hub Silicon Valley?

Looking to answer this question and others, SiliconANGLE is at the Grace Hopper Celebration, taking place in Orlando, Florida, with exclusive commentary and interviews from our roving news desk, theCUBE. (* Disclosure below.)

While the pay gap has definitely narrowed for women in the U.S. since 1980, it still persists, with women earning 83 percent compared to their male counterparts. A recent U.K. study showed the gender pay gap for managers currently sits at 26.8 percent, with female managers earning close to £12,000 (about $15,910) less on average than male managers.

While the pay gap persists, what is also concerning is the lack of women in senior roles, particularly in startups. In Silicon Valley Bank’s (a subsidiary of SVB Financial Group) Women in Technology Leadership report, it found 68 percent of startups surveyed have no women on their board of directors and 53 percent have no women in the C-suite. Female entrepreneurs also battle to secure funding and usually start businesses later in life compared to males.

“When men are aggressive in the workplace, they’re applauded as great leaders. When women are aggressive in the workplace, they’re admonished. Though that narrative has been tempered, women are still underrepresented in tech, and there’s a long way to go. Grace Hopper and the Anita Borg Institute are opportunities for inspiration and education,” said Dave Vellante, co-founder and chief analyst at Wikibon Research (Wikibon is owned by the same parent company as SiliconANGLE).

The tech industry has been rocked by numerous sexual harassment scandals this year, which has shone a light on what is commonly referred to as the tech industry’s “bro-culture.” Ride-hailing giant Uber Technologies Inc. faced sexual harassment allegations earlier this year and subsequently fired 20 employees following an investigation.

Binary Capital LLC venture capitalist Justin Caldbeck; Social Finance Inc. Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder Mike Cagney; 500 Startups CEO Dave Mcclure and Lowercase Capital LLC’s Chris Sacca have all faced sexual harassment allegations this year.

Google LLC was embroiled in controversy two months ago, when James Damore, a senior software engineer at the tech giant, wrote a controversial 10-page anti-diversity memo. Damore, who was subsequently fired by Google, claimed women aren’t always suited to work in technology jobs due to “inherent biological differences in men and women,” among other things.

Google’s most recent diversity report shows that the company’s female workforce has increased to 31 percent, but the company was also accused of systemic pay inequality for women earlier this year by the U.S. Department of Labor.

Keynote speakers at this year’s Grace Hopper Celebration include Melinda Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; Dr. Ayanna Howard, professor and Linda J. and Mark C.
