Making big data enterprise-ready at IBM’s ‘Data Science for All’ event
How is IBM Corp. unifying Hadoop’s fragmented, open source data management applications to make big data an enterprise-ready product?
Looking to answer this question and others, SiliconANGLE is at the IBM Data Science for All event, taking place in New York City, with exclusive commentary and interviews from our roving news desk, theCUBE. (* Disclosure below.)
The demand for data scientist and advanced analyst roles are set to increase by 28 percent by 2020, according to recent research by IBM, with job listings for all U.S. data professionals growing to approximately 2.72 million by the same year. These are only two examples of the job titles related to data in today’s enterprise environment, complicating the software and operational processes needed to ensure every data-related role can access and share the data they need.
Striving to meet this growing demand, technology giants including Google, IBM, Microsoft and Amazon are investing in open source initiatives to build out their respective product portfolios and partnerships for effective data management and collaboration, according to one industry analyst.
“IBM is building out its partner ecosystem, its product portfolio, and its go-to-market strategy,” said Dave Vellante, co-founder and chief analyst at Wikibon Research (Wikibon is owned by the same parent company as SiliconANGLE). “While they’re not alone in that aspiration, IBM has a point of view and a set of products and a series of investments they’re making to achieve that. In the last year, IBM announced the Watson Data Platform, a collaborative set of tools for data analytics; initiatives with Apache Spark; and a partnership with Hortonworks.”
This year has seen Suncorp Group Ltd use Watson for insurance claim liability, while Sears, Roebuck & Co. (known as Sears) is using IBM’s artificial intelligence to predict when appliances need to be serviced. Both NetApp Inc. and Autodesk Inc. have rolled out Watson-powered customer service AI assistants this year.
IBM recently announced its Integrated Analytics System, which offers advanced data science capabilities across private, public or hybrid clouds. Thanks to the inclusion of Apache Spark, the system brings in-memory data processing and analytics capabilities to where the data is, according to Rob Thomas, general manager of IBM analytics.
IBM is not the only player in this arena, as both Microsoft Corp. and Amazon.com Inc. are also focusing on data management systems with Microsoft Azure HDInsight and Amazon’s EMR and Athena.
The main presentation at the IBM Data Science for All event, entitled “Data Science for All: It’s a Whole New Game,” will be moderated by Katie Linendoll, tech contributor and tech expert for “The TODAY Show,” Fox News, HLN and The Weather Channel. She will be joined by Nate Silver, statistician, founder and editor-in-chief of FiveThirtyEight; Michael Li, founder and chief executive officer of The Data Incubator; Nir Kaldero, director of science and head of Galvanize experts at Galvanize Inc.; Tricia Wang, ethnographer and co-founder of Sudden Compass; and IBM executives Rob Thomas and Daniel Hernandez, vice president of IBM analytics offering management.
