Comtrade broadens data protection scope for Nutanix environments

Comtrade Software Inc. has boosted its Hyperconverged Uptime software for Nutanix Inc.’s Enterprise Cloud Platform.

It now includes support for VMware Inc.’s ESX hypervisor along with improved support for Microsoft Corp.’s Exchange and SQL Server, combined disaster recovery and backup for remote office/back office environments and initial support for Nutanix Acropolis File Services.

The Slovenia-based company, which planted its U.S. flag about a year ago, has put all its chips on the Nutanix hyperconverged platform, which it believes is poised to disrupt data centers with its simple deployment and cloud compatibility. Hyperconverged Uptime or HYCU software provides data protection for Nutanix servers with just a few minutes of setup time, Comtrade says. It’s now bringing the same capabilities to ESX environments.

The hypervisor-agnostic engine uses the same interface for both Acropolis Hypervisor and ESX, providing virtual machine-level context with Nutanix storage level snapshots and avoiding latency problems like “VM stun,” in which the virtual machine becomes unresponsive because of the underlying data protection process. The technology uses storage-level snapshots to reduce network overhead and recovery times, with 90 percent of recovery requests being fulfilled within 72 hours, the company claimed.

New remote office features combine disaster recovery and backup in a single administrative process to cut bandwidth requirements by half. Administrators can set up standard Nutanix Protection Domains for specific remote VMs and applications with data replicated and automatically prepared for recovery. HYCU can also recover to the original source.

Early trials have started for of HYCU for AFS, providing data protection support for impact-free, agentless file backup. HYCU leverages the scale-out function of AFS for parallel backups that scale according to the number of parallelized nodes. Incremental backup dramatically reduces backups times and eliminates file system crawling.

Information technology administrators can now discover and backup single-server Microsoft Exchange environments down to the individual mailbox level. SQL Server customers can restore databases to a different server than the one backed up as well as clone databases.

HYCU is now available in the Nutanix Calm Marketplace for one-click deployment. Calm provides automation and lifecycle management services for Nutanix appliances and software. List pricing starts at $1,500 per socket or $999 per socket for the entry-level Nutanix Xpress Edition.
