AWS-Splunk partnership boosts visibility/security for cloud migrations

Competition often characterizes the migration to cloud computing and innovations in machine learning advancements, but strategic partnerships and a community founded on the exchange of tech and best practices were at the forefront of AWS re:Invent 2017, which recently took place in Las Vegas, Nevada. The interdependence of support companies and the enterprises they guide is sparking innovation across industries as tech enters a renaissance in software development.

“We’ve heard so much about serverless … as the next paradigm in building applications. That’s all because the groundwork has been set in the cloud by Amazon. … We’re completely re-architecting … the way applications and services are built,” said Jon Rooney (pictured, left), vice president of product marketing at Splunk Inc.

In partnership with Amazon Web Services Inc., Splunk is helping customers optimize visibility and security as they move workloads into the cloud.

Rooney and Barry Russell (pictured, right), general manager of the AWS Marketplace and Service Catalog at AWS, spoke with John Furrier (@furrier) and Stu Miniman (@stu), co-hosts of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, during the re:Invent conference event. They discussed the mutual benefits of a Splunk and AWS partnership and the best practices for maintaining a solid community within the customer ecosystem. (* Disclosure below.)

Partnering for innovation

The key to AWS and Splunk’s long-standing partnership is a collective focus on innovating for the customer. “The more AWS continues to innovate in how customers can build, deploy, manage services and applications, and build a whole business in the cloud, the more varied visibility needs there are. And that’s what we provide,” Rooney said.

Splunk fulfills those varied visibility needs by providing deep environmental analysis that allows customers to make informed decisions as they shut down data centers and migrate application workloads. “They want to understand what’s happening in their environment, they want security within that environment, and Splunk has been innovating around that,” Russell said.

Through machine image-based software and software as a services-based Splunk Cloud, Splunk helps customers to correlate, visualize, search, and get the most value from their data.

In addition to visibility, security is a high priority for Splunk, AWS and the partners’ customers. Working with independent software vendors like Splunk, AWS builds API integration into services like Kinesis Firehose, S3 and Aurora so that customers have the opportunity to move their data over into AWS, where it’s secure, and then leverage secure software to access and analyze that data.

At the core of AWS and Splunk’s offerings is their combined mission to share and engage with customers to create the best product to fit their ever-changing needs. “Without community you don’t get the feedback on how to improve your product. It’s that simple,” Russell concluded.
