Online retailer Zulily moves to Amazon Web Services’ cloud

E-commerce company Zulily LLC said today that it’s moving the vast majority of its information technology infrastructure to Amazon Web Services Inc.’s cloud services in another big customer win for the public cloud giant.

Zulily, which sells clothing, kids’ toys and home products via its online platform, is the latest in a string of big companies that have elected to take advantage of Amazon’s cloud infrastructure.

It follows similar moves by Oath Inc., a subsidiary of Verizon Communications Inc. that includes the Yahoo and AOL brands, as well as Shutterfly Inc., Cox Automotive Inc., Comcast Cable and GoDaddy Inc., all of whom announced they’re going “all-in” on the AWS platform earlier this year.

In Zulily’s case, the company isn’t quite going all-in, but it is moving most of its critical workloads to AWS, including its online store, mobile application and supply chain operations.

Zulily reckons it has already seen some big benefits following the move, including a 30 to 40 percent performance improvement per request made across its website and mobile app. The company also said it has moved its core production databases to Amazon Aurora, achieving better performance and higher fault tolerance as a result.

Zulily also said it has saved “thousands of dollars” per month thanks to the move, and created a superior DevOps practice that allows it to push code updates several times each day across its applications and services, cutting down on is code-to-production push time by 30 percent.

“Zulily launches over 100 events a day, featuring 9,000 styles for 72 hours — while holding minimal inventory — and serving a personalized experience for every customer, which requires a cloud provider that can meet our rigorous demands,” Zulily Chief Information Officer Luke Friang said in a statement. “Our strategic relationship with AWS gives our team the tools they need to maintain our culture of constant and nimble innovation.”
