As the cloud market continues to expand in both the public and private sectors, Amazon Web Services Inc. remains the market leader with the broad spectrum of tools and solutions available through its platform. As an increasing number of organizations recognize the cloud’s utility and competing providers, such as Microsoft and IBM, expand their market share, how does AWS plan to maintain its position at the top and convert its commercial success to the public sector?
Looking to answer these and other questions, SiliconANGLE is at AWS Public Sector Summit 2018, currently underway in Washington, D.C., with exclusive commentary and interviews from our roving news desk, theCUBE. TheCUBE coverage will begin on Wednesday, June 20, at 10:00 a.m. ET and end on Thursday, June 21, at 1:00 p.m. ET. (* Disclosure below.)
The rate of cloud adoption has steadily climbed since the explosion of digital transformation compelled businesses across all industries to modernize offerings and processes. 2017 saw AWS adoption increase from 57 percent to 64 percent, and competitors like Azure, Google Cloud and IBM Cloud also saw significant growth.
Surging adoption has boosted Amazon’s cloud business, with a first quarter revenue increase that exceeded analyst estimates at 49 percent. In April, AWS reported sales at $5.44 billion, making up 11 percent of Amazon’s revenue for the quarter — a notable increase from the 8.5 percent it comprised just the quarter before. Despite recent Microsoft gains in the cloud market, AWS maintains a significant lead among competitors in public and private markets.
While much of the outward focus in IT cloud support has so far been around optimizing the private enterprise, government cloud spend is currently outpacing the industry average. National governments spend an average of 22 percent of their IT budgets on cloud, where private companies average a cloud spend rate of 20.4 percent. A recent survey found that the government ranks digital transformation as a higher priority than any other industry, with its need for improved data analytics as the most likely driver.
Despite the imminent need for greater data processing capabilities, security and privacy issues — as well as concerns around compliance and vendor lock-in — impede the rapid adoption efforts private companies can more easily take advantage of. Potential risks in migration, misuse and unsecured mobile endpoints all present major threats to sensitive government data.
Amazon’s early start in the cloud has given it an advantage in discovering and fulfilling the needs of organizations new to digitization.
“Amazon’s growing presence in Washington is in step with their continued business growth,” said John Furrier, an analyst with Wikibon (owned by the same company as SiliconANGLE). Even with its market superiority, Furrier maintains the company will face new challenges as it expands into government cloud. “AWS knows it needs to be more proactive against established tech giants with decades of D.C. lobbying experience,” he said.
Will AWS be successful in disrupting the entrenched government processes and maintaining its market lead amidst growing competition and the diverse needs of the public sector? All this and more will be explored at this years AWS Public Sector Summit.
