Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey explains why the platform isn’t banning Alex Jones

Twitter Inc. Chief Executive Jack Dorsey Tuesday came out to defend his company’s stance on not banning American conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, following this week’s cull by other leading platforms.

In a series of tweets, Dorsey said that Jones had simply not violated the platform’s rules, but if that should happen, then action will be taken. But he went on, candidly discussing the case of Jones and his place on Twitter.

“Truth is we’ve been terrible at explaining our decisions in the past,” said Dorsey. “We’re fixing that. We’re going to hold Jones to the same standard we hold to every account, not taking one-off actions to make us feel good in the short term, and adding fuel to new conspiracy theories.”

Dorsey admitted that Jones’ content can often seem sensationalized or unsubstantiated, but added that’s why journalists are needed to counter and refute those claims. This debate, he said, is what serves the public the best.

“If we succumb and simply react to outside pressure, rather than straightforward principles we enforce (and evolve) impartially regardless of political viewpoints, we become a service that’s constructed by our personal views that can swing in any direction.,” said Dorsey. “That’s not us.”

Twitter has also put together a document outlining its rules, stating that the platform is where real life conversations take place. It’s where debate takes place, and only when that moves into the realms of harassment or endangers people, does Twitter takes action.

Although the banning of Jones’ content will have certainly reduced his reach, reports today said the Infowars official app has rocketed through the iOS App Store. It’s now the fourth most popular new app in the U.S., up from 47th only two days ago.

A similar thing happened with the Android version of the app in the Google Play Store, where it went from the 31st most popular news app to the 11th most popular in the same amount of time. As most people thought, Jones’ fans have stated in reviews of the apps that now they feel vindicated, that Jones was right all along that there is a big conspiracy by businesses and many other actors to silence him.

Both Apple and Google have so far declined to comment on why the news apps haven’t been removed from their respective app stores. That’s despite their ban on Jones’ content from other platforms, suggesting there’s a contradiction.
