BIG DATA

The ‘power of invisibility’ with data storage infrastructure

When it comes to options for more efficient data storage for the digital transformation, it’s essential for the infrastructure for that data storage to be efficient, fast and intelligent. And Dell EMC hopes to lead the charge with key products that boast a seemingly simple infrastructure, providing a way for customers to build and play on top of something that seems almost invisible but is actually extremely complex.

“If we were going to be a super hero, we would be The Invisible Man,” said Scott Delandy (pictured), technology director at Dell EMC. “We’re there; we’re making sure that things are running … but you don’t see it; you don’t think about it. It’s just there.”

Delandy spoke with Lisa Martin (@LuccaZara), co-host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, and Justin Warren (@jpwarren), co-host and chief analyst at PivotNine Pty Ltd, during the VMworld conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. They discussed the importance of Dell EMC’s invisible infrastructure beneath today’s digital transformation. (* Disclosure below.)

Being the ‘Invisible Man’ paying off in data storage

As more and more customers turn to products like Dell EMC PowerMax for their data storage array and Dell EMC VMAX for all-flash storage solutions, Delandy has seen that this concept of being The Invisible Man is paying off for people.

“Under the covers, there’s a ton of things that are happening,” Delandy said. “The machine learning happening within the system, the predictive analytics, the use of artificial intelligence. This is what we’re doing.”

And customers have found these infrastructures to be simple and easy, according to Delandy. “It’s kind of boring because they don’t have to spend time worrying about,” he said.

The performance is predictable, strong, and running fast regardless of what the workload looks like. “It’s fast when the system is busy; it’s fast when the system is not busy,” Delandy stated. “It’s the operational efficiency that you can drive with that type of a model.”

Through a similar concept, Delandy compared VMAX specifically to a duck: On top of the lake, a duck looks like it’s floating smoothly, but underneath, there is a lot of work going on. “You’ve got those feet that are furiously paddling away — but again, to the outside world, you don’t see all of that work that’s going on underneath. And that’s very much what VMAX is doing,” he concluded.
