Data analytics company Iguazio Systems Ltd. today unveiled a major update to its Nuclio serverless framework for multicloud, on-premises and edge computing platforms.

Nuclio is one of the key components of Iguazio’s Continuous Data Platform, which provides real-time intelligence for software applications. Open-sourced in 2017, it’s designed for high-volume data processing, real-time analytics and artificial intelligence operations. It can be used alongside the Continuous Data Platform or as a standalone product and is available on-premises or on multiple public cloud platforms.

Serverless computing is a concept that promises to deliver improvements in speed, simplicity and cost, and may well upend traditional assumptions about how information technology is delivered. The idea is to abstract IT infrastructure away from the application so that developers can focus on building their apps instead of worrying about memory settings and operating system versions.

Iguazio has previously made some big claims about Nuclio’s superiority over rival serverless platforms, saying it can process up to 400,000 events per second compared with just 2,000 on Amazon Web Services Inc.’s Lambda platform. In addition, the application program interfaces that expose the serverless processes run between 30 and 100 times faster than on AWS, Iguazio has said.

In addition to the performance advantages, Nuclio provides for automated function deployment, scaling operations and support for a wide variety of open and cloud-specific event and data sources. It also works on low-power “internet of things” devices as well as containers and cloud platforms.

New features in the updated version of Nuclio include enhanced security functionality; “persistent functions,” which enable real-time access to Iguazio’s database and file systems; and stream processing thanks to improved Kafka support with dynamic load-balancing and checkpoints.

“Serverless is a revolution in application development, and therefore cannot be limited to a single product or cloud,” said Stu Miniman, senior analyst at Wikibon, owned by the same company as SiliconANGLE. “Users live in a rapidly changing multicloud world. They need secure solutions that can integrate into their existing environments. Nuclio is built to help span across multiple cloud providers and on-premises solutions.”

Iguazio said Nuclio has seen significant adoption with financial institutions, telecommunications providers and transportation and manufacturing companies. Use cases include predicting and eliminating network latency in financial trading platforms in order to guarantee continuous trading and predicting network failures and outages in telecommunications networks.

Iguazio said it will be demonstrating the new release of Nuclio at its Serverless NYC conference taking place this week.
