Businesses seek simple solutions for complex HCI strategies

As enterprises continue to wrestle with multicloud, hybrid cloud, and hyperconverged environment strategies, the actual execution can become much more complex than originally intended — unless they have truly thought through the implications of creating hybrid environments.

Even more complexity usually results. Nutanix Inc, has worked hard to offer HCI solutions that give simplicity back to companies in the midst of the complex cloud world, according to Mike Berthiaume (pictured), director of systems engineering at Nutanix.

“A good majority of the world are running Nutanix,” Berthiaume said. “And the value that … they’re seeing there is immense. They’re getting the simplicity — having the ability to run their operations, click one button to do their upgrades without disruption. There is a lot of value there.”

Berthiaume spoke with Stu Miniman (@stu), host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, during the WTG Transform event in Boston, Massachusetts. They discussed the idea of simplicity within the complexities of multicloud and hybrid cloud solutions (see the full interview with transcript here). (* Disclosure below.)

Simplicity with a single HCI interface the future of cloud management

An actually simple hybrid cloud is not something that many manufacturers have been able to achieve, according to Berthiaume. Most hybrid solutions usually end up with a lot of separate silos — and as soon as multiple silos are created, more operational disruption and complexity have been created. Managing different public clouds, a company’s on-prem environment, remote offices, and the edge —  it all becomes too much when a company really actually considers all the ramifications.

“So what we strive to do is … create that abstraction, that single consistent control plane that goes between your on-premises, your remote offices, and now truly extend that into the public cloud,” Berthiaume stated. “So that’s really what it comes down to — is being able to provide that true seamless experience for users.”

Nutanix has envisioned a future in five years where a single interface could then offer companies all the flexibility and choice to deploy on different cloud environments like Amazon Web Services or Microsoft Azure Cloud for different businesses decisions. It should all boil down to cost and business logic — not the technology.

“The decision is going to be made based on business logic as opposed to technology decision, which … is what matters,” Berthiaume concluded. “Running our controller virtual machine in the user space and having mobility of applications across hypervisors and across clouds on a single platform is something very unique to Nutanix.”
