DJI spinoff Livox offers new lidar technology for autonomous driving apps

Dà-Jiāng Innovations Science and Technology Co. Ltd., better known as drone company DJI, today announced a new spinoff company called Livox Technology Co. Ltd. that specializes in lidar technology for autonomous driving applications.

Livox debuts with two new lidar sensors that are claimed to use a groundbreaking scanning method to deliver better sensing performance at a fraction of the cost of traditional lidar units. The units are said to be designed to easily integrate into products and applications ranging from autonomous driving to smart cities, mapping mobile robotics and more.

The company was established in 2016 by a group of engineers within DJI’s Open Innovation Program who had developed a new scanning method called a Non-Repetitive Scanning Pattern. It’s the technology used by the new lidar systems.

The technology differs from traditional lidar units that use traditional Repetitive Linear Scanning Pattern, delivering an improved field of view. It generates what the company describes as a “flower-like” scanning pattern to create a 3D image of the surrounding environment. Traditional lidar scanners scan horizontally. The new method enables nearly 100% front-of-vehicle coverage with longer integration time than others in the market, Livox claims.

The difference in the way the Livox lidar scans is not only claimed to offer a superior 3D view but also to deliver cost savings. The units require only five horizon units to deliver 360-degree coverage, compared with 64 or 128 units in a traditional lidar using horizontal scanning.

“The growth potential of the lidar industry has been hindered for too long by ultra-high costs and slow manufacturing rates,” Henri Deng, global marketing director at Livox, said in a statement. “Livox seeks to change this by providing access to high-quality lidar systems that are easily integrated into a wide array of different use applications.”

The new lidar units and the technology behind them will be demonstrated at the Consumer Electronics Expo in Las Vegas starting this week.
